Ed Wynn

American actor

Ed Wynn was an American actor (1886-1966). In 1922, he was among the first to broadcast a full-length comedy show to a radio audience. In the following decade, he became a pioneer in combining comedy routines with sponsor spoofs on his popular radio show as the Texaco Fire Chief. Wynn also wrote and directed many Broadway shows.


On the small and big screens, he hosted The Ed Wynn Show on CBS from 1949 to 1950. He appeared in films such as The Diary of Anne Frank, Cinderfella, Babes In Toyland, The Absent-Minded Professor, and Mary Poppins, where he played Uncle Albert alongside Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. He also provided the voice for the Mad Hatter in the Disney classic Alice in Wonderland.
