Cuban singer (1925–2003)
Celia Cruz was a Cuban singer and one of the most influential voices in Latin music. She rose to fame with Celia & Johnny, her collaboration with Johnny Pacheco. Cruz won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album in 2000 for Celia Cruz and Friends: A Night of Salsa. Her album La Negra Tiene Tumbao, featuring the hit songs La Negra Tiene Tumbao and Ríe y Llora, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Salsa Album. Her final album, Regalo del Alma, won the Grammy for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. Honored with a Smithsonian Lifetime Achievement Award, Cruz also had a street named after her in Miami. She appeared in films such as The Mambo Kings with Antonio Banderas, The Perez Family, and the children's special Sesame Street: Sing Yourself Silly!
